OUR JOURNEY

Our Origin Story

From university research to a medical device company advancing orthopedic implant surface technology.

Where It All Began

NASA & Ion Bombardment

In the 1980s, NASA was working on ion bombardment technology which created unique surface features. The surface morphologies had the potential for commercial applications. NASA contacted Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where a team was researching tissue interfaces and surface morphologies.

The Research Connection

Case Western Reserve University

Dr. George Picha, Auxano® Medical’s founder and CEO, was in graduate school at Case Western at the time, studying biomaterials. With NASA’s opportune outreach, Dr. Picha could delve into the possibilities of surface morphologies emerging from ion thruster technology.

From Lab to Clinical Use

Patented Pillared Surface Morphology

This knowledge, combined with studies on tissue interface mechanics, led Dr. Picha to develop a patented pillared surface morphology for soft tissue application. Interest from the medical industry soon followed and, eventually, an industry partner licensed the patent, advancing it into clinical use.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

Breakthrough in Orthopedic Implants

The medical field adopted Dr. Picha’s surface technology, and he spent the next two decades exploring other business and career interests.

01
BREAKTHROUGH RESEARCH

Then, in 2009, an opportunity appeared during a breakthrough foundational research project at the University of Akron. The project explored the feasibility of applying pillared technology within hard tissue, spurring curiosity about what was possible.

02
SERIES OF STUDIES

A series of studies from University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, followed. These pivotal studies examined the dimensional parameters of the pillared array, various orthopedic materials, and threaded, fenestrated geometry.

03
NEW POSSIBILITIES

Results from these studies showed strong tissue-implant interface and robust ingrowth of healthy and mature bone, revealing the potential for surface morphology to revolutionize orthopedic implants. These discoveries led to new possibilities for innovation and ideas for medical device applications.
